Spring Break part 2

Spring Break 2018

Tuesday April 3
Finally.. my spring break and Derek's off week lined up!
Sadly, the temporary fix on the water heater that Derek did before my birthday camping trip, was indeed very temporary.  So we only could do a day trip before Derek had to get back to being the amazing person he is, and put in a new water heater/fix the foundation/ build a new bathroom because why not?
Derek wanted to go back to the Devil's playground, and we took the route via Toole/Wendover up this time. So we decided to do some Visit Utah geocaching along the way.

 First up: Benson Grist Mill
It wasn't open yet but thankfully we didn't need to be on the property in order to find it.
Seriously.  Look how happy that dog is and how much she loves her daddy!

Derek: No wonder the Donner party got stuck.. they were carrying full metal jail cages!

Pit stop at the Salt Flats...

I've been wanting to stop here for years, but we never go out to Wendover.

Historic Wendover Airfield where the Enola Gay was housed.
It wasn't all that great, but they do give rides in vintage planes and air shows that we'll have to check out.

Lemme tell you how to actually get there...
From Hwy 30, turn south when you get to the intersection that really does point you in the right direction to Lucin.
This sign, makes it seem like you need to turn onto the old railroad, when in fact, it's pointing to the road AFTER it curves.  So keep on going on the main road, ignore any of the super rough turn offs.
After you cross real train tracks that are in fact, still working and hopefully you don't have to wait for a train to pass like we did.
You'll follow until you come to an old fenced area with this sign.  Welcome to Lucin.
You can walk around and check out these root cellars.

You'll pass Lucin, go down a hill, through a wash, up a hill, to this fork. Keep to the left.  The Sun Tunnel sign points that way, but it also points to the road next to it so... follow that TL Bar Ranch Road
After 2ish miles (pending on when you start your odometer) you'll come to an intersection with no signs. Go East. Then drive until you see the tunnels.
Ragnar loved running all over and through them.

It was FREEZING. Guess how many layers I have on? 5. 5 layers and was still freezing.

My heart melts! Look at those two!

Now we've been to all the "land art" in Utah. Next up will be to find that one guy who says his little piece of desert is his own country..  it's not far from here and if we were staying the night we would've driven out to it.
Leaving, we drove around in the wash.
Last stop: Devil's playground.  We went here for our anniversary and got rained out.  Derek wanted to go here again and get some night sky photos but of course it was cloudy.  So we got the cache, hiked around, made a fire for dinner and headed home.
If you want one of these pins, there's like 10 of them in this box.

Pretty skies, pretty neat guy.
Then driving home, we found a clear patch so Derek pulled off the side of the road to take some photos while semi trucks flew past us.
FYI it was 28 degrees when Derek took his photos.
It was a fantastic day spent as a family.  We loved it.
