Devils Kitchen to Eureka

Halloween 2015.

What's more Halloween-y than going Ghost Town hunting!!

 Friday 10/30

We got a late start to the day but since we weren't going far it didn't matter.

 Someone was very excited to go adventuring!

First stop was the Nebo Loop Byway to The Devils Kitchen.

Devils Kitchen.. very Halloween-y.

 It was VERY cold at 8351 - 8372 feet.. and I wasn't ready for it so I slipped on my car sweats (sweats that stay in the car for emergencies like this) and Derek's other jacket.  He said I looked like a hobo.

 Had a picnic lunch..

 They say it's like a Little Bryce Canyon...

the hodos part yes, but these rock formations were more conglomerate. 

 We went on a little hike, Ragnar wanted to naw on this tree..

Then chew the ice off the platform..

Turkeys! HUGE TURKEYS!!!!! (I thought they were boulders.. then they started moving..)

 Tons of little turkeys!!!

Now taking the "scenic" way out.. HWY 132 towards Delta

 Made it to Eureka..

We tried to find Paul Bunyan's woodpile, but ended up traveling down random dirt roads.  It was getting late so we turned down another dirt road and EUREKA! We found the BLM sign, we were on the right road.  We drove for a bit, saw a spot we liked and set up camp. We spent the night telling ghost stories and getting stepped on by Ragnar (we camped in the car).

The story of the beginning, but came out after book 3, and book 5 comes out next year, so technically you can call this book 4.  It was interesting, but hard to get attached to the characters since they're not in the remaining story.

The next book NDJH English department suggested we read which is about handicapped kids going to camp.  It's a good book but not a good choice for the immaturity of my class.

Library book sale find, which explains why I haven't read any of the previous books.  Luckily most of the beginning sums up whatever you needed to know from the other two books so thankfully this can stand alone.

Dead Men Talking by Christopher Berry-Dee

Pgs. 288

Library book sale find. I've never heard of any of the people in this book and the author seemed very full of himself while writing this.  The author seemed like he gave up writing altogether on some of them and add published the letters.  Some stories made me really sick reading.

Hounded (The Iron Druid Chronicles #1) by Kevin Hearne

Pgs. 292

This book was actually fun to read. Not really what I thought it was going to be like, in a good way. I enjoyed having to look up some characters to read what the Celtic Histories say about them. Always some form of action happening that the down time was very welcomed.

Whistling Past the Graveyard by Susan Crandall

Pgs. 307

Set in the 1960's in the south, the book gives you a perspective of how life was like.  Took a while to figure out what the point of the book was, but it was still a fun read.  There was some intense parts with the almost rape scenes, which sadly was the only time I felt any kind of emotion for the characters.

The month of October...

So whilst practicing my matrix moves dodging some ninja stars...

Thanks to Dave, I didn't have to go to the hospital and get stitches.

Got some visitors from Arizona to go on a nature walk at Snow Basin... and some new running friends for Ragnar...

Suzanne is a very talented artist.  She did this for me, to give to my dad.
She nailed it perfectly.

Sonja & The Brynners did a run-a-thon for a school fundraiser.  We gave them a flat donation but I also told them if they did 35 laps we'd have an ice cream party...

 I told TJ if she cheered super loud she could join..

 It was a fun ice cream party :)

October. It's officially burrito season.

It's also the season of Ragnar getting super cuddly..

FINALLY!! Our Daddy/Daughter Date that was our gift to our dad from last year's Christmas to a RSL game!!!

BXC went to State.. Girls placed 5th

Science Hike happened...

Sage collecting hike happened.. 

First non-smudging stick made.. smells AMAZING just sitting on the desk.

The Springs Day 3/4

Saturday 10/17

After a little bit of sleeping in we headed to The Garden of the Gods.
FREE open public space! If you enjoy rocks, like we do, then this is such a fun place!
It was also super crowded with very little parking areas so we didn't get to do as much hiking as we wanted to.

Hey, it was match day.

Then we came across an underpass with this interesting art installment.

The Incline at Manitou Springs. 

I didn't get very far since Derek had plans to go shooting with his friend.

Guess that just means that we'll have to make another trip!

Sunday 10/18

This is how far we got onto base because we had all of Derek's weapons in the car...

I've been to the academy before and I thought it'd be fun to catch some kind of service at the Chapel.

Since these plans bottomed out, we took a detour in downtown Denver to look at some art.

Turned into a drive by viewing of said art because due to the insane amount of marathon runners and some weird "occupy movement" people. 

Oh well.  Guess that just means we get back to Ragnar faster!
